Table Tennis Development in Gore
Matt Short, a local Gore resident, was employed in 2010 by Sport Southland to deliver four sports to primary schools in Eastern Southland over a one year period, focusing on one sport per term. This year, 2011, Matt is delivering Table Tennis in Term 2. This involves 5-6 weeks of sport-specific skill sessions, 2-3 weeks of in-school competition and a Final’s Day involving all schools. If you would like more information on this please contact Matt at Sport Southland Gore on 03 208 3846

Southland Table Tennis 75th Jubilee
Southland Table Tennis Association celebrated 75 years of being affiliated to the New Zealand Association. Table Tennis had been played for many years in Invercargill before this.

The jubilee was held on Saturday 16th April, with a Get-together and afternoon tea in the Southland Table Tennis Stadium, followed by a dinner at Elmwood Gardens at night. The stadium was open on Sunday morning for anyone who wanted to face their old foes at the other end of the table.

111 registrations were received with 99 attending the afternoon and 81 at the dinner and approx 30 on Sunday morning. People travelled from Melbourne, Hastings, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin to attend.

A great display of memorabilia was set up and brought back a lot of memories. Sunday morning brought back some good memories of past games. Everyone enjoyed it.
The highlight of the dinner was the introduction of a Southland Table Tennis Hall of Fame. Much to the shock of John Catto he was the first inductee. John was the first Southlander to win a New Zealand Title. See Southland Hall of Fame page for a list of his achievements.

Some Photos from the Celebrations can be seen here>

Southland Table Tennis Hall of Fame
As part of the Southland Table Tennis 75th Jubilee a Southland Hall of Fame was unveiled. John Catto became the first inductee. (photo receiving certificate). John was the first Southlander to win a New Zealand Title in 1952, winning the U16 Boys Singles. He backed this up the following year followed by the U18 Boys Singles in 1954 and 1955.
